Why we are in AFUED by Ondo CP
The Ondo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adebowale Lawal, has explained that the decision to visit Adeyemi Federal University of Education (AFUED) Ondo in company of several police officers from the state, was aimed at fostering effective partnership, that would help in boosting security of lives and property in the institution.
Speaking at the courtesy visit held on Thursday, October 2, 2025 in the institution, the Ondo State number one police Chief, emphasized importance of security in society, noting that for it to be effective, “everybody must be involved”.
He said: “Security should not be exclusively left for the police rather, the community, local government, students and institutions should play their part, police will later come in to compliment their efforts”, the police chief remarked.
Congratulating the vice-chancellor of the University Prof. Bayode Isaiah Popoola, for his appointment as head of the institution, the Ondo Police Commissioner, gave assurance of his readiness to continue to provide necessary support in the area of security for students and workers in the University.
CP Adebowale Lawal, however, charged Management of the institution to redouble their efforts in tackling security issues concerning students residing outside the campus of the University.
He suggested the idea of registering all private hostels accommodating students of the University in the town, stating that the step, would help in boosting intelligence gathering and provide necessary information needed to enhance their (student’s) safety.
His words: “I would like to suggest that since majority of the students stay in private hostels, one of the ways through which intelligence gathering can be enhanced, is to register all the private hostels, where the students are living”.
“By registering the hostels, the institution would be able to know where they stay and the owners of the hostels. The institution would also have the opportunity of advising the owners of the hostels, the need to use part of the rent paid to them by the students, to provide security.” He remarked.
The Ondo State Police Chief however, commended Management of the University for “instilling discipline in the institution and sustaining the legacy of excellence for which it is known”.
Responding, the Vice-chancellor, AFUED, Prof. Bayode Isaiah Popoola, expressed appreciation for the visit, and thanked the Ondo state CP for the interest” he has in the institution”.
The University Administrator, also expressed gratitude to the Ondo state Police chief for advice given to the institution’s Management especially on the issues relating to security, adding that his administration, would not relent in ensuring the protection of lives and property in the institution.
Prof. Popoola highlighted some steps taken by his administration to address issues bordering on security since assumption of duty in University, stating that the visitation made to all security formations, which included police stations, office of State Security Service and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps by him in Ondo community, were geared towards strengthening cooperation, partnership and facilitating intelligence sharing between the Security agencies and the institution.
His words: “I want to thank you for your advice on the way to go. We are trying to improve our facilities here. Right now, we have less than 30 percent of our students residing here, we are going to improve our facilities.”
