Why we embark on planting of trees in our University by ASUU chairman.

The Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Nigeria, Adeyemi Federal University of Education (AFUED) Ondo branch, Dr. Olatubosun Ajisafe, has stated that the decision by the union, to carry out trees planting exercise in the institution, was aimed at contributing its quota to the efforts at combating the effect of climate change in the University.

Ajisafe made the statement on Wednesday October 14, 2026, while speaking during tree planting exercise undertaken by the union at its Secretariat in the University.

Speaking on the exercise code-named " Let Nature Thrive at AFUED, Protect Our Trees, Preserve Our Green Spaces", Ajisafe stated that preceding the ceremony, a committee headed by the Vice- Chairman of the Union, Dr. Victor Omojeje, came up with the idea of the tree planting initiative, which fell in line with the directives from the National body, which mandated all branches nationwide to carry out the exercise in all institutions.

According to the AFUED ASUU branch chair, the initiative by the union was not only meant to combat erosion in the institution, but also meant to beautify it.

His words: "Climate change is no longer a new threat to us, the effect is here, we talked about the change in temperature in recent times and also about floods in the environment".

"One of the simplest and cheapest things to do, is to plant trees, so that one would be able to control erosion, and cool the temperature in our environment."

" We decided to embark on trees planting in our University in order to beautify it and manage its soil, so, that is why, the Union at the branch, decided today to take this initiative by planting trees first in our Secretariat before we do it in other parts of the campus".

Earlier in his remarks, the Vice- Chancellor, Adeyemi Federal University of Education (AFUED) Ondo, Prof. Bayode Isaiah Popoola, represented by his Deputy, Prof. Ireti Folasade Alao, described the exercise as a good initiative.

The University Administrator said, "we need to plant trees around us in order to make our environment green and lively with fresh air and also to protect it from erosion ".

"Trees are also wind breakers, strong winds are broken by heights of trees around us, and of course, trees are things that provide shade for us that we can even sit under and enjoy cool breeze and fresh air. Like it is said all over the world, that when you cut a tree, you need to plant like ten to replace it, and that is why, the University is supporting this initiative", he remarked.

The tree planting exercise which was flagged off by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ireti Folasade Alao, was followed with the performance of a similar act by Drs. Victor Omojeje, Olaniyan Rotimi Francis and planting of a coconut tree by Dr. (Mrs.) Mercy Fasehun .

The exercise was witnessed by members of ASUU AFUED chapter, and other eminent personalities from within the University.
