Don to students: make effective use of your time
The Deputy Director of the Directorate of Gender and Sustainable Development Studies, Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo (AFUED), Dr. Charles Omotayo, has charged the students of the institution to make effective use of their time by engaging in productive and purposeful activities.
Omotayo gave the charge during a seminar organized by the Directorate of Gender and Sustainable Development Studies titled, "Seminar on Compulsory General Studies on Gender Education (SEA 001, SEO 001 and ENT 211) for Degree I–IV Students," held on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, in the University.
Speaking on the theme, "Youth, Gender and Nigerian Politics," the University Don encouraged students to always position themselves positively in every sphere of life.
He explained that there is no universally accepted definition of youth, noting that different organizations adopt varying age brackets. According to him, Nigeria defines youth as persons between 18 and 35 years, ECOWAS recognizes ages 18 to 35, while the United Nations adopts 15 to 24 years in its statistical framework. He also maintained that the universally recognized biological sexes are male and female.
Omotayo further stated that politics begins from the departmental level through the faculty and Students' Union Government before extending to the larger society. He stressed that active participation in campus politics offers valuable leadership experience and life skills that remain beneficial after graduation.
He urged students to recognize that youth is a transient stage, advising them to identify their strengths and weaknesses and remain accountable to responsible mentors. He also encouraged female students to participate actively in politics while calling on their male counterparts to support and encourage them.
Also speaking at the seminar, one of the facilitators, the Chief Pharmacist, AFUED, Mrs. Funmilayo Nejo V. delivered a lecture titled "Fundamentals of Human Behaviour and Casual Sex."
She described human behaviour as the potential and expressed capacity of individuals or groups to respond to internal and external stimuli throughout life.
While highlighting the dangers associated with casual sex among unmarried persons, she cautioned students against casual sex, cohabitation, rape, abortion and all forms of sexual violence.
According to her, such behaviours could result in academic distraction, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), health complications, unintended pregnancies, psychological trauma and unstable marital relationships later in life.
Another facilitator, CEO of Perez and Peret Ventures, Founder of Yhumbite Bakery and CEO EAP Consulting services, Mr. Orisamuyiwa Dickson, spoke on "Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Venture Creation." He explained that entrepreneurship creates jobs, solves societal problems, generates wealth and drives national development, while innovation promotes new products, improved processes, marketing strategies and business models.
He also outlined the stages of venture creation, including identifying problems, generating ideas, validating business plans, sourcing funds, launching and growing businesses.
Dickson encouraged students to take advantage of entrepreneurial opportunities on campus, listing ventures such as laundry services, printing, graphic design, bread distribution, artificial intelligence services, tutoring, photography and delivery services as viable businesses capable of providing additional income while studying.
